So, the Samoa season continues to improve with more unpredictable strategery and an aggressive style of Hidden Immunity Idol gamesmanship that brings something new to the table (in the same way Yau Man invented the fake HII strategy and Amanda perfected Final Tribal Implosion). And, as it turns out, some of the Samoa Survivors are actually more interesting than I thought, like…uh, Laura, who got booted just as we started getting to know her (in the same way John hasn’t really registered until now, meaning he’ll probably get voted off in a week or two).
And, of course, the reason for the general blandness of the character interaction and the overall weakness of the season is the ridiculous amount of time devoted to Russell and Shambo. In recent weeks, I’ve come around to thinking it’s not Russell’s fault the editors air every scrap of footage they have of him, and if he wasn’t so overexposed I’d enjoy his pugnacious bulldog act a lot more. But Shambo…yeccch. I don’t want to look at her, I don’t want to listen to her and I don’t want to imagine her sad ham smell for even one more second. Middle aged people still angry about the popular kids who didn’t invite them to parties in high school are just sad, even without mullets, and it’s exasperating to see this particular goony bird suddenly go from punchline to power player (at least in her own mind), cackling all the way. But, oh, the comeuppance will be sweet when she finally goes, ‘cuz there’s no way she could actually win…right?
At any rate, it’ll be at least a fortnight before the Samoans get another chance to vote her off, because Thanksgiving week brings us the traditional 7th Inning Stretch of the Survivor season…
