It’s tempting to speculate that, shortly after making the movie Ed Wood, Tim Burton somehow actually became Ed Wood, but that theory does a disservice to both directors. Even at his worst, Burton is usually good for a handful of mind-zapping visuals, the likes of which would have been impossible on Wood’s shoestring budgets. And for all his deficiencies as a filmmaker, give Wood credit for one thing: at least he told original stories.
