SXSW Part Three – Scott’s Take

• Those who guessed the first feature film from YouTube would be a compendium of cute kitty videos or Ke$ha parodies were proven wrong when Life In A Day premièred at the Paramount Theater. On July 24, 2010, thousands of people worldwide broke out their video cameras to document a day in their lives, the results of which were then uploaded to YouTube and eventually whittled down to 95 minutes by a team of editors overseen by director Kevin Macdonald (State Of PlayThe Last King Of Scotland). The result is a sort of mash-up documentary, a channel surf through one day in the life of our planet. Of course, seeing that all residents of the global village have some things in common (we all brush our teeth and urinate, for instance) and some things that are unique to each individual (not all of us buy an inordinate amount of pianos off Craigslist) is perhaps not as revelatory an experience as producers Tony and Ridley Scott might believe.
