It’s the women’s 5,000m final at the 2011 world championships in Daegu, South Korea. In the lead pack of petite Kenyan and Ethiopian runners there’s a lone blonde, a head taller than the rest. She stays with them until the last couple of laps. Then they surge away from her and she comes in seventh, the highest any American woman has ever finished in that event. That woman is Lauren Fleshman, 30.
